Complete Streets

The Regional Planning Commission of Greater Birmingham (RPCGB) is currently updating and drafting new policies for the Birmingham MPO’s Long Range Transportation Plan (LRTP) and short-range Transportation Improvement Program (TIP). This effort includes developing “complete streets” policies that ensure roadway improvements in Jefferson and Shelby Counties are routinely planned, designed and operated to enable safe and efficient mobility for pedestrians, cyclists, transit riders, citizens with disabilities and motorists. On Friday November 21st, the RPCGB held a policy development forum to seek input into the development of complete streets policies. Tom Maxwell (Senior Environmental Planner) kicked off the session with a presentation titled Introduction to Complete Streets – Planning & Design Policies. Tom Magee (Deputy Director) and Casey Covington (Transportation Engineer) from Metroplan (Little Rock, Arkansas MPO) conducted a two part presentation summarizing their Roadway Design Standards and Implementation Procedures. Following the presentations two separate panel discussions were facilitated by Steve Ostaseski (Principal Planner). The first panel represented the interests of roadway users and stakeholders (e.g pedestrians, bicyclists, transit riders, motorists and merchants). The second panel represented the interests of roadway planners and designers (e.g. public and private sector planners and engineers).
